Elizabeth Banfield

About

I trained in printmaking at the South Australian School of Art (BA Fine Arts, 1981-4) and moved to Victoria in the late 1980s. Please see the downloadable CV below for more information about my exhibition history, and the collections where my work can be seen.

In my current art practice I make fine line linocuts and artist books, predominantly using Japanese papers. I often use more than one sheet of tissue paper, stitching them together with embroidery thread to intensify the colours and layers of fine lines.

The artist books are either sculptural or traditional codex forms, with handmade enclosures. These have the double use of protecting the book, as well as adding to the experience by gradually revealing the artwork within.

My subject matter is usually the Australian landscape, with focus on the beautifully asymmetrical leaves of the Eucalypt tree, and all the inspiring alterations made to their shapes and lines through the predation of insects. The themes that continue to interest me are: mending / repair, correspondence, loss, memory, and concealment / revelation.

Editions are quite small, 2-3 for artist books, and 5-10 for 2D work.
